VOLUNTEERS have been thanked for their support in tidying up a town centre.

The Leader reported previously how almost hundreds of members of the community got involved with Mold Spring Clean April 5 and 8.

At a meeting of Mold Town Council on April 17, Mold town manager Dave Hill shared the final figures of the event with town councillors.

A total of 730 volunteers contributed more than 875 hours of their time to the effort, which saw gateway signs cleared, litter picking carried out, 'grot spots' to the rear of the former Co-op store cleared and the River Alyn banks addressed.

The scheme, which also celebrated the 10th birthday of its mascot Springy, saw more than 330 bags of rubbish collected.

Samantha Roberts, clerk to Mold Town Council, told the Leader: "We'd like to thank all of the volunteers that came out and got involved over the weekend.

"The event would not have been as successful as it was for its 10th anniversary without the support it received."

Mr Hill also told the town council that this year's event had seen increased business participation, and that more than 70 young players from Mold Rugby Club got involved the following weekend.

The scheme also saw schools including Bryn Gwalia and St David's RC School participate.

Mr Hill said: "I’m really pleased by the number of businesses that support the town, through their involvement with community initiatives.

"Many people have commented that the town overall was much cleaner than in previous years – we’ve put this down to two main reasons, firstly that we had cleared away the legacy of many previous years of neglect but most importantly, the community itself is taking greater pride in the town and not dropping as much litter.”
