A leading games development course at Wrexham Glyndŵr University is continuing a record run of success after securing two national award nominations.

The Grads in Games awards are set to be held on April 17, at the Search for a Star finals in Sheffield.

Wrexham Glyndwr University has been shortlisted as one of six universities for the Educational Institution award, while student Huw Owen, from Anglesey, has been nominated for the Student Hero award.

Huw, who is studying for an MSc in Computer Games Development, was one of a group of eight students selected for the award. The shortlist is made up of current games students who have demonstrated a positive impact with their fellow students over the past year by going out of their way to support, progress and inspire others.

The Grads in Games awards award nominations are the second time in six months the course has been nominated for awards – with staff and students bringing home three trophies from December’s UK Games Fund Awards in Dundee.

At the Games Fund awards, Senior Lecturer in Computing Richard Hebblewhite won Community Contributor of the Year and his games development team’s innovative Enterprise Lounge won the Tranzfuser Local Hub of the Year award while Static Shell Studios, a games studio made up of former Glyndŵr alumni, won the Tranzfuser games development programme award.

The success of the team was also marked earlier this year when Wrexham Glyndwr University was chosen as the location for Channel Five’s Gadget show to film coverage of Tranzfuser’s Jamfuser Game Jam – with the show set to hit screens later this year.

Richard said: “This is the second time in six months our course and our students have been nominated for national awards.

“The nomination for Educational Institution recognises the work our course does in preparing students to graduate straight into industry roles – whether that is with a major studio such as Ubisoft, who recruited several of our alumni last year, or through setting up and developing their own studio – such as Static Shell games.

“It’s great to see the work we do in developing our students’ careers is being regularly recognised by national awards ceremonies, and it’s also great to see Huw nominated for the Student Hero award – he really deserves it.”
