A FLINTSHIRE man shot in the head by a pellet from an air gun was within an inch of being left with brain damage.

Joe Evans, from Caerwys, was out drinking on Friday night with friends in Mold when the incident occurred, and he wants the shooter found quickly before someone is seriously injured.

North Wales Police have confirmed they are investigating the incident and have appealed for witnesses in the hunt to find the perpetrator.

The Leader:

Joe Evans could have been left with brain damage from a pellet fired by an air gun

The 24-year-old explained: "Me and some friends were drinking in the beer garden in the Queen's Head between 11pm and 11.30pm when what felt like a stone hit me on the top of my head.

"Once I knew it wasn't, I ran down the lane and jumped over a fence to try and find whoever had done it, but it was pitch black and I could have been running the complete wrong direction for all I know.

"I'm fairly certain it was deliberate, why else would you fire an air rifle in a setting like that?

"If it didn't hit me, it would have hit one of my mates in the region of the eye with where he was stood."

Mr Evans, who was treated at Glan Clwyd Hospital, is just relieved that the damage was not a lot more serious.

The Leader:

The pellet removed from the skull of Joe Evans

He added: "I was told by hospital staff that if it hit me in the eye I would have been blinded, but I was equally as lucky that it didn't hit me in an inch lower, as I would have been left with brain damage.

"They removed the pellet there and then as it had got lodged into my skull."

Mr Evans hopes the perpetrator is found before they potentially do it again.

He said: "I just want them to be found so I know it won't happen to anyone else, it could be a woman or young child that is hit, and they might not be as lucky as I was."

The Leader:

A North Wales Police spokesman said: "We have been to the scene and have been carrying out house to house enquiries.

"There is an ongoing investigation and we would urge anyone with information to contact us on 101, quoting reference X046219."
