A MAN who used a specialist de-tagging device to steal sportswear has been fined £120.

Terence Daly, 60, stole goods worth £168 from Sports Direct's store at Broughton Shopping Park.

He was spotted acting suspiciously as he removed the item tags with the de-tagger by store staff, North East Wales Magistrates Court heard.

All the goods were recovered by security staff and Daly, of Marwood Towers, Everton, Liverpool, pleaded guilty to theft and going equipped for theft on March 9.

Prosecutor Justin Espie said he became aggressive when he was confronted.

Ian Birch, defending, told the Mold court: "You might be surprised that at a late stage in life he has resorted to this type of offending.

"He was a full-time carer for his father who passed away last year and he is now a full-time carer for his mother who is in the onset of dementia.

"He has his own health problems as he is waiting for a new hip and has had a pacemaker fitted.

"Since the turn of the century he has only appeared before the courts on two occasions."

Magistrates ordered Daly pay £50 compensation for the damage caused to the sports goods while he was using the de-tagger and he also has to pay £85 court costs and a £30 victim surcharge.
