Pupils from a primary school in Hope have gone all out for World Book Day and invited their parents along for the fun.

From fairytale princesses to superheroes, Ysgol Estyn Community School in Hawarden Road have embraced World Book Day and come to school as their favourite literary characters.

Headteacher Gareth Jones said: “It has been an incredible response to World Book Day this year. Lots of children have gone above and beyond to bring their favourite books to life. It was lovely seeing up to 70 parents and carers come along this afternoon as well to join in with some of the activities we have planned to celebrate reading and literacy across the school.”

Children spent the day completing book reviews, having group reading sessions and opened a reading café for their whole family to come along and enjoy a story.

Mr Jones added: “While it is all great fun to come to school in fancy dress for the day, we must emphases the true meaning of the day. As a school, we encourage our children to read for pleasure as much as possible and this can only be done with help from their family.”

World Book Day is the biggest campaign on the planet to offer every child and young person the opportunity to read and love books. As part of the scheme, £1 book tokens will be distributed to over 15,000 educational establishments in the UK and Ireland.

Only 26 per cent of eight to 18-year-olds are reading daily outside the classroom, compared with 43 per cent in 2015, a study for the National Literacy Trust said.
