A MINERA man and his granddaughter have raised £300 for a cancer treatment unit in Wrexham

John and Charlotte Edwards collected the money from three local pubs over Christmas while dressed as Santa and his Elf and presented the cheque to The Shooting Star Unit at Wrexham Maelor hospital.

For Mr Edwards, the gesture held a special significance as his wife Patricia was treated for breast cancer last year and it was her who presented the donation to the Consultant Oncologist, Mr Cochrane.

Mr Edwards said: "We were both quite shocked when Mr Cochrane said he could now literally go out and buy some equipment to assist in operations.

"It would also better enable trainees to observe him carrying out his work and have better visibility."

Mr Edwards, who collected the donations from customers at the Golden Lion Coedpoeth, Kings Head Bwlchgwyn and Tyn y Capel Minera, said the admission of how grateful the department is for funding, showed how desperate the NHS was becoming.

He said: "The care and attention given at the unit is second to none and the doctors and staff must feel very frustrated at not having the funding to carry out their duties.

"My wife and I will be eternally grateful for the professional and caring way she has been treated at the Shooting star and Bodelwyddan."
