LABOUR politicians in Wrexham have welcomed a decision to provide much-needed financial backing for the town’s Citizens Advice service.

The future of Wrexham Citizens Advice was in doubt last year as funds from Wrexham Council had been phased out to zero.

The local Labour Group intervened and put down a motion requesting urgent action to prevent the imminent closure of the service, which resulted in £25,000 being found.

Now, following a series of meetings between the council and Wrexham Citizens Advice, a £60,000 funding package has been announced for the 2019/2020 financial year.

Wrexham MP Ian Lucas, who joined local Labour members in the town centre last summer to gather signatures on a ‘Save our CAB’ petition, said: “This is a very welcome turnaround. Well done to the local Labour group for providing such effective opposition and forcing this U-turn from the council.

“Our Citizens Advice service provides vital support to thousands of people across Wrexham and it was unthinkable that it might have had to close.

“I was proud to play a part in the campaign to save it and thank everyone who took the time to sign our petition.”

Lesley Griffiths AM, who corresponded with Wrexham Council on the matter numerous times, added: “The Citizens Advice Bureau offers invaluable support to people here in Wrexham.

“It was extremely short-sighted members of Wrexham Council’s executive board to even consider scrapping the funding, particularly when the demand for CAB services is increasing due to the Tory UK Government’s controversial welfare reforms.

“This very welcome U-turn from Wrexham Council would not have happened without local Labour councillors’ hard work and constant lobbying.

“Their dedication has ensured people in Wrexham will continue to benefit from the vital services Citizens Advice has to offer.”

Ruabon councillor Dana Davies, leader of the Labour group on Wrexham Council, said: “The right decision has now been made.

“This review highlighted the vital work the Citizens Advice service does for many residents of the county borough and we are delighted that the council has finally recognised this.

“We hope this funding agreement will continue into the future.”
