A MOTHER has told of her miraculous escape after a terrifying house fire at her property.

Six people were rescued from the house fire on Alyn Road, Buckley in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Dawn Hughes was one of those evacuated, along with a 26 year-old man, three teenage boys and a teenage girl, who were transferred to hospital suffering from smoke inhalation following the incident.

Speaking at the scene after her release from hospital, Ms Hughes said: “It was the dog that woke us all up at about 5am.

“We could smell smoke and I thought that the incinerator had gone up in the garden and the first thought was to get everyone out.

“Just as we did, the windows started to come through with the heat, it was literally that quick.

“It was coming from the dining room which is usually used as a library, and I’ve got 1,000 Dennis Wheatley books in there, including first editions.

“I’ve lived here for 24 years, since I was 18 and nothing like this has ever happened before, but the main thing is that everyone, and the dogs are okay.

“The firefighters were absolutely brilliant, they were really good, I can’t speak highly enough.

“Now there is the headache of sorting everything out but it could have been a hell of a lot worse.”

A joint investigation into the cause of the fire is being carried out by North Wales Fire and Rescue Service and North Wales Police.

Two fire appliances from Deeside and Wrexham were called to reports of the blaze shortly before 5am.

Crews used two hose reels, four sets of breathing apparatus and a thermal imaging camera to tackle the fire which was confined to a downstairs living room.

Bob Mason from North Wales Fire and Rescue Service said: “A woman in her 40s, a 26 year old man, three teenage boys and a teenage girl were all asleep at the time of the fire.

“These residents had a narrow escape as there was no smoke alarm in the property.

“I would appeal to all residents to ensure they have a smoke alarm and to test alarms regularly. Smoke alarms provide an early warning sign allowing you and your family to escape safely from a fire.”
