ELDERLY residents are afraid to leave their homes at night, a councillor has said.

Shotton Councillor, Sean Bibby, said residents of Brook Road are concerned about a spate of anti-social behaviour incidents in the past week.

He told the Leader he was contacted by members of the Digging Deeside group who saw the damage on Tuesday morning, January 1.

He was also contacted on Friday night by a concerned resident in Brook Road, Connah’s Quay, who witnessed from his property a large group of youths smashing bricks about 8.55pm and a car was set on fire at the bottom of Killins Lane at about 9.45pm.

The Leader:

Bricks have been smashed and flood defences damaged

Cllr Bibby said: “I’ve had a lot of complaints from concerned residents regarding anti-social behaviour on the former Somerfield car park. This has been ongoing for some time however there have been serious incidents over the past few days.

“Residents have witnessed brickwork on the bridge and flood defences being smashed by a large gang of youths and then dumped in the Wepre Brook. Many elderly and vulnerable residents are now too scared to venture out at night in the street.

“Also, there was a very serious incident on Killins Lane where a car was set on fire. Whilst this could be pure speculation there is suspicion by those living close by that they could be linked.

The Leader:

“I have raised this with Natural Resources Wales whose Flood Assets Team are currently investigating the site and with the police. I feel there is a need to impose a Dispersal Order on the area with the serious nature of what is going, which gives the police additional powers to deal with this.

“The people living close by deserve to live in peace and quiet and not be disturbed and intimidated by repulsive behaviour.”
