FIVE people were arrested on New Year's Eve for driving over the limit, a police sergeant has said.

Sgt Neil Hughes, of the South Flintshire policing team, told the Leader that on New Year's Eve alone, five arrests were made across the whole of Flintshire for drink and drug driving, which is far higher than usual.

He said driving over the limit is still a huge problem, especially over the Christmas period, adding: "Driving over the limit is still a big problem. People don't seem to be getting the message.

"Five arrests have also been made this week in Flintshire South and four of those were for drug driving. It appears especially to be younger drivers who are adhering to our drink regulations but not our drug regulations."

The Sgt said that despite the number of incidents increasing during the festive period, New Year's Eve was no busier than an average weekend.

He said: ""It was no busier than the usual Friday or Saturday. Pubs were incident free which was strange. We had the usual number of domestics, but no more than the regular weekend this time of year.

"Incidents this year were up about 15 per cent during New Year's week, but many of those were concerns for safety and domestics. People get bored with each other and think it's time to fight but in fairness, behaviour was pretty good."
