DOZENS of parents watched their children embrace a new project and remember the fallen of the First World War.

Pupils at Ysgol Caer Nant, Connah’s Quay, held a World War One exhibition at their school where they performed live plays, read out poems they had written and informed attendees of facts during the war.

Rachel Davies, Key Stage Two manager, said the exhibition was part of a new learning strategy called Mantle of the Expert.

She added: “All children took on an activity that has taken their interest, from nurses to the boys in the trenches.

“It’s been really good, the children have enjoyed it. They have taken control in their learning and they led us in what they wanted to do.”

Mantle of the Expert is an educational approach that uses imagination to generate engaging activities for learning.

Pupils also sold refreshments that they made in school, including, trench cake, and all money raised will be donated to the Royal British Legion.

Hannah Gillamhurst, 10, decided to take on the role of a nurse during the war and told attendees interesting facts about what life was like.

She told the Leader: “I chose to be a nurse because I do want to be a nurse when I’m older. I find it interesting.

“I like doing the play because when we do it we do it repeatedly and when we do this we do different things.”

Evie Jones added: “It’s really good. We are doing a play about a dad becoming a soldier and having to leave.

“We wrote the script and then practised and then we became really good at it.”
