A TOWN'S Remembrance event saw its biggest turnout ever this year, organisers have said.

Buckley mayor Cllr David Ellis told the Leader he was very pleased to see so many people turn out in the town on Sunday.

He also praised the hard work of the Buckley Society for a First World War exhibition held over the weekend.

The parade began at the Precinct Way car park at the town's recently unveiled memorial artwork, at the former Royal British legion site, and made its way to St Matthew's Church before returning to the memorial site.

Cllr Ellis said: "The turnout was excellent - there was a lot of fantastic work done by a lot of people.

"I am very proud to be mayor this year as we commemorate the 100 year anniversary of the end of the war."

Cllr Ellis added that the names of the 114 registered Buckley soldiers who died in the war were also read out during a service at St Matthew's Church in the town.

Steve Evans, chairman of Buckley Royal British Legion, said: "I have been involved for 25 years now as parade marshall and now as chairman of the Royal British Legion.

"This year we were expecting about 600 but there were about 750 - it was the biggest ever.

"There were quite a few people who had not attended a parade before and there were also quite a few ex-servicemen."

Mr Evans said the Royal British Legion Club in Buckley is becoming 'desperate' for new members.

He added: "We run the parade and we only have 40-odd members left in Buckley.

"Anyone interested in helping can get in touch."
