CLASSIC car owners have been told to be vigilant after a series of incidents in which prized vehicles have been damaged or stolen.

Wrexham town centre sergeant Vic Powell has made the plea after a number of incidents in the last month, in which classic cars have either been stolen or damaged by thieves and vandals.

In June, the Leader reported on a family's devastation after their vintage Morris 1800 was torched in Acton.

The Morris 1800 belonging to Jacob Theunissen, of Chestnut Avenue, Acton was torched in the early hours of June 13.

The vintage car, which was of sentimental value to the family, was parked outside the Acton Community Centre, an area that the family thought would be safe.

Sgt Powell has confirmed that there have yet to be any charges made in relation to that arson.

In the last few weeks, a Morris Minor and a Volkswagen MK1 Golf have been taken overnight from their owners homes, and at the weekend damage was done to the door of an older Fiesta.

Sgt Powell said: "These vehicles are someone's pride and joy and you wonder what goes through some people's minds.

"I would advise people in the area who own classic cars to invest in anti-theft devices.

"These seem like random and opportunistic crimes because these older cars have no in-built defence and opportunist thieves might see them as easy to take.

"I urge classic car lovers or owners of those type of vehicles to take precautions and protect their vehicles overnight.

"Earlier this month a Morris Minor and a Mark One Golf were taken overnight from outside their owners' houses.

"Last weekend (August 19) an older Fiesta had its door bent.

"Regarding the Morris that was torched a few months ago, no-one has been charged yet but enquiries are still ongoing."
