A 'ROLE-MODEL' schoolgirl has been praised after receiving a sports award.

Last week Flintshire Council announced the outcome of the annual Flintshire Healthy Schools Celebration of Achievement.

Drury CP School pupil Rose Duggan won the the female 'most promising sportsperson 2018' jointly with two other winners - Abbey Mayers from Mountain Lane School and Maisy Parry from Ysgol Ty Ffynnon.

Jack Crompton, year six teacher and P.E leader at Drury CP School, praised Rose and explained she received the award after becoming a current British Champion when she won gold in the random attacks section in the British Ju Jitsu Association Championship in Walsall.

According to Mr Crompton year six pupil Rose is also 'rugby mad' and is the captain of the school's tag rugby team.

Outside of school she plays contact Rugby for Chester, Winnington, Port Sunlight and Valkyries, representing her clubs at Chester RUFC and Rygbi Gogledd Cymru fixtures.

Mr Crompton said: "It is not just her achievements in sport – she is a great role model for other pupils.

“She promotes girls sports throughout the school and the children look up to her.

"She has a fantastic attitude towards school, especially sports and we couldn’t be prouder of her.”

Following the presentation of the awards Councillor Ian Roberts, Flintshire Council's cabinet member for education, said: “This is a very special celebration event.

"It is important that we recognise the sporting achievements of children and young people and celebrate the county’s talented athletes.

“The Healthy Schools Scheme has been running for over 15 years in Flintshire and it goes from strength to strength. It’s wonderful to see the children so engaged and enthusiastic about this inspirational scheme.”
