A PUBLIC meeting is to be held tonight to discuss university plans for a Wrexham playing field.

Earlier this week Glyndwr University unveiled ambitious plans to carry out a £60 million overhaul of its accommodation and campus facilities.

To help fund the 'Campus 2025' project the university is to seek planning permission for some of its town sites, so they can be sold to developers for housing.

One of the sites is a green space on brownfield land at Dean Road, Rhosnesni, where there is a sports pitch, home to Borras Park Albion FC.

The university is looking to retain the sports pitch, but move it to the west of the field, while the other two thirds of the patch would be used as space for around 70 houses to be built.

Rhosnesni County Councillor Mike Davies has helped organise a public meeting to discuss the plans.

It will take place tonight at the scout hut on Dean Road, at 7.30pm.

Former Rhosnesni County Cllr Anne Evans said she is concerned about the plans, and an overall loss of green space.

She said: "I'm really, really worried.

"I have been on the community council for many years and we have tried to be as accommodating as possible but in the last 12 months or so it feels we have been losing more and more green space.

"If the Dean Road playing field is sold that is more green space.

"The only thing we are sure of is Acton Field as that is an Owain Glyndwr field and protected.

"There doesn't seem to be an overview of planning and green spaces just seem to be being nibbled away at."

Unveiling the plans on Tuesday, Glyndwr vice-chancellor Professor Maria Hinfelaar said the university had not received any invitation to attend a public meeting, but would be willing to engage with those who have concerns, and urged people to take part in the public consultation.
