A YOUNG man from Wrexham has died following a fall from a hotel on one of Spain's Balearic Islands.

Thomas Owen (Tom) Hughes, 20, had been on holiday in Magaluf, Mallorca, for just a few days before he died after falling 65ft from a balcony, according to local reports.

A UK Foreign Office spokesman said: "We are providing assistance to the family of a British man who died on June 3 in Mallorca and are in contact with the Spanish authorities."

Friends of keen swimmer Mr Hughes, a former pupil of Rhosnesni High School who worked as a lifeguard at Waterworld in Wrexham, have rallied round to set up a gofundme page to bring his body home and support the family.

Josh Halliwell, who set up the page, said: "Following the tragic news about Tom we are looking to raise some funds in order to help the family as much as possible during the coming weeks, however we can.

“Tom was a fantastic person who would have wanted to help anyone and was a pleasure to be around.

“Any donations are greatly appreciated and will certainly the cause."

Tributes have flooded into the gofundme page including "Taken too young, my heart goes out to his friends and family. RIP Tom" from Nicola and Mickey Walters and "So nice, so young, so sad. RIP Tom. Our thoughts are with your parents" from Arthur and Christine Millington.

Rhian Leonard wrote: "Devastating news. Heart goes out to both Sharon and Steve. Great, young lad."

Meanwhile Amy Carter wrote: "One of the kindest people you’d meet. Such tragic news, leaving a hole in many people’s hearts."
