Vandals are continuing to blight a football club leaving its future in doubt.

Saltney Town Football Club had the windows of its changing rooms smashed on Thursday, March 26, with this being just one a string of incidents of vandalism of the club's property over the last 12 months.

And while no reporting of the incident was made to the police, such occurrences are leaving club chairman Darren Meredith feeling whether all the hours put in to the club are going to waste.

He said: ''Is it worth it? is a legitimate question I ask myself now. We have a senior side who play at a good standard (Welsh National League Premier Division), and junior football for ages 2-9 and it all costs about £7,500 a season to run.

''We can't charge admission as it's not an enclosed ground like others in the area. Our senior players pay subscription fees, and we won't cut back on facilities for juniors in the winter so we will always book 3G or indoor facilities.

''Parents pay a small membership fee each month for the kids, but we can't increase that as it's about getting lads playing football not making money.''

And yet this is not just an isolated incident, but one of many that have plagued the club over the last year.

Darren added: ''We've had break-ins, smashed windows, damaged dugouts, vandalism to pitch-side boards. We even had the roller dragged to the middle of the pitch and the arm taken off it and thrown in the brook! We put nets up on the Reserve pitch to encourage kids to come down and play, and the pegs were stolen.

''It's a constant battle to get anywhere near enough to pay our running costs, and we can ill afford to pay for extras. Sunday to Saturday you'll find our Junior coaches will have volunteered a minimum of five hours between training and games, whilst Marc Edwards (club secretary) and I will be closer to 15 with senior games, off field activities and other tasks like mowing the pitch.''

Darren warned that such acts are bringing the whole future of the club into serious jeopardy.

He said: ''Parents know their children are down on Sandy Lane and it's time responsibility was taken for these mindless acts. If it carries on then there won't be a club here anymore, it's as simple as that.''

County Councillor for Saltney Stonebridge Ward, Veronica Gay, said: ''They work so hard, it's wicked and I do not know why vandals keep damaging their property.

''We're talking about a local community football club whose sole aim is in helping to support the community, I'm utterly speechless.''
