Waterworld leisure centre has been branded "disgusting and unhygienic".

A member of the public, who wishes to remain anonymous, expressed concerns to the Leader over the state of the leisure centre, which is run by Freedom Leisure on behalf of Wrexham Council.

They said: "The state of Waterworld, now run by Freedom leisure is simply disgusting and unhygienic.

"They are proud of their swanky new gym facilities and costa coffee shop but this is just smoke and mirrors from what awaits you upstairs.

"The prices of a swim/ gym membership have gone up but the cleanliness of swimming area has not.

"They are in desperate need of a facelift and a clean. I had not been for three months but last week I was shocked by how poor the cleanliness was.

"Dirty floors, disused tissues, clumps of hair, three lockable showers out of order, poor smell etc.

"Restaurants display star ratings for hygiene. If it applied to Waterworld, it would be hard to award it one star."

Wrexham Council signed an agreement with Freedom Leisure to take over the management of four leisure and activity centres and five dual use sports facilities across the county in 2016.

The agreement was for 10 years and Wrexham Council retained some managerial powers over pricing and price rises.

As part of the deal, the centres at Waterworld, Chirk, Gwyn Evans and Queensway have benefitted from £2.25 million of refurbishment.

Visitors to Waterworld have seen improved reception and café area, a larger gym and refurbished toilets and changing areas.

Freedom Leisure is a not for profit company which already manages 15 sites in Powys.

Andy Harris, Freedom Leisure area manager, said: “As part of our agreement with Wrexham Council there has been extensive refurbishment of the ground floor area of Wrexham Waterworld as well as significant investment into our other leisure facilities within the county.

“It has always been our intention, if sufficient funds allow, to spend an element of the capital budget on making some improvements to areas of the swimming pool changing village and we are currently finalising proposals to consider this.

"The changing rooms are staffed and a cleaning timetable in place to ensure cleanliness is kept to a premium, however, at high usage period, such as school holidays it can be tricky to keep on top of this as all times.

"We apologise to customers if standards were not at an appropriate level at the time of their visit.”

A Wrexham Council spokesman added: “We work closely with Freedom Leisure to ensure the leisure and fitness needs of our residents are met at all times.

"Anyone with any complaints over facilities at Waterworld, or any of our other Leisure and Activity Centres, should contact Freedom Leisure on hq@freedom-leisure.co.uk”
