NEWTOWN start the most crucial month of their Welsh Premier campaign, with a crunch derby with local rivals Aberystwyth Town on Saturday (2.30pm).

Key to their season is versatile defender Gavin Cadwallader, who has emerged as a vital component since switching to the heart of defence this season.

And ahead of the visit of his former club, the 23-year-old has re-iterated his desire and determination to maintain top flight football at Latham Park.

“March is a massive month for this club,” said Cadwallader. “Obviously it is important that players enjoy their football but nobody should be under any illusions that our priority is the top 10.

“We will be playing a lot of the sides around us in the table in coming weeks so its important that we continue to battle and pick up points.”

Aberystwyth Town have been tipped for Europe after a superb second half to the season following the departure of ex-Newtown boss Brian Coyne.

Cadwallader said: “They are a quality side. It will be good to meet up with a few old mates that I played with during my two seasons with them.”

The former Shrewsbury Town youngster has revelled in his new defensive role alongside veteran Andrew Thomas and has set himself several targets for the season.

“We have been much tighter at the back since January and I know that this must continue until the end of the season,” he said. “We have some great players at Newtown, none more so than Andrew Thomas, Craig Williams and Damien Daniels, who complete our defence.

“However I know that goals will also be essential so I’d be delighted to score a few.”

The Robins take on the Seasiders without ineligible goalkeeper Dave Roberts and the injured Jamie Breese.

Breese was punched while attempting to break up a scuffle during Coleg Powys’ match with Swansea University last weekend.

Breese sustained a broken jaw and has been ruled out for the campaign.
Manager Darren Ryan said: “We are all absolutely gutted for young Jamie. The lad has been a revelation this season and we are all wishing him a speedy and full recovery.”

Ryan added: “This month is massive for Newtown Football Club and our fate will largely depend on how many points we pick up in this period.

“Taking points from our home games is vital and we will go into the match with Aberystwyth Town, with the knowledge that we can beat anyone.”
