HUNDREDS of people were entertained as they turned out to watch Wrexham’s Christmas lights switch-on last night.

Crowds of people gathered on Queen’s Square to see the cast of Glyndwr’s University’s Sleeping Beauty pantomime officially launch the festive season in the town.

Following the switch-on, attention turned to the skies as visitors enjoyed a firework display.

Entertainment was provided throughout the evening as musician Kameelion took to the stage, as well as dance group Delta Academy and former X Factor star David Heath, who was part of the band Eton Road on the ITV talent show. Other stars included included John Cooper from Sky and Carly Nickson.

One of the organisers, Neil Thompson, said it was rewarding to see such a great turnout.

“It’s really great to see. I’m really impressed,” he said. “It takes a lot of work for all of us to organise the event.”

He added: “It was raining last year and we still had a great crowd.”

John Cooper, who was one of four members from the Sleeping Beauty cast to switch on the lights, says he loves coming to Wrexham.

“This atmosphere is wonderful,” he said. “The fact that so many people have come out in this cold weather to have fun is great.

“And that’s what it’s all about – having fun.”

Those who attended were given goody bags and glow sticks to help light up the crowd.

There were also a host of fair ground rides, a festive hog roast and Wrexham Lager was on sale.

A Wrexham Council spokesman said: “The Christmas lights switch-on is always a popular event and it was great to see so many families enjoying the festivities.

“The switch-on marks the official start of our Christmas events, which includes the launch of late night shopping in the town centre.

“We will also have the opening of Santa’s Grotto at the People’s Market on Saturday, December 7 as well as the popular Victoria Christmas Market on Thursday, December 12.”
