WREXHAM Football Club could readopt ‘Association’ as part of its name – as it did for nearly 100 years.

Members of Wrexham Supporters Trust will be asked to vote on whether they want their club to be called Wrexham AFC once more at the trust’s annual meeting later this month.

The vote was prompted by a long-standing debate between supporters over the club’s name.

The word ‘Association’ was dropped from the name after former owner Geoff Moss took over in 2006 ending a run of almost 100 years of the club being known as Wrexham AFC.

The club’s name has changed a number of times during its history. When it was formed in 1864, it was referred to as Wrexham Football and Athletic Club.

At the annual meeting in September 1872, it became Wrexham Football Club.

For one season, in 1881, the club was named Wrexham Athletic and in 1884 following the club being expelled by the English Football Association, it was reformed as Wrexham Olympic.

In 1887 the club reverted back to Wrexham Football Club, but by 1912 it had become a limited company and was named Wrexham Association Football Club, which it remained until Mr Moss took control in 2006.

With the club having been in administration, a new company was formed and was renamed ‘Wrexham FC 2006 Ltd’, trading as Wrexham Football Club.

Wrexham Supporters Trust and Wrexham Football Club board member Spencer Harris said: “Many people have been debating what the club should be called.

“The club history shows that it has had many different names over the years.

“The board felt it should be left open to members to decide as it’s the members who own the club, not the board.

“We did register the new company when we took over as Wrexham AFC Ltd, although we continue to trade as Wrexham Football Club. It has been AFC for a long period of the club’s life, but I do think Wrexham Olympic sounds quite exotic.

“We’d like to see a really big turnout like we had last year as there will be a lot of debate.

“We will also be talking about the budget for the upcoming season and other important issues.”

If trust members approve of the change the football club’s badge and trading name will be changed from Wrexham Football Club to Wrexham Association Football Club with effect from the 2015-2016 season.

The WST annual meeting will be held at 7.30pm on June 27.

l It’s not the first time fans have been able to vote on a change to the club’s badge.

At last year’s annual meeting, WST members approved changing the date on the club’s badge from 1873 to 1864 after new evidence came to light regarding when the club was established.
