A TRIBUTE to legendary Leader photographer Les Evans has been unveiled – in East Africa.

Schoolchildren at Mbweka Primary near Kwale, in Kenya, have received a desk made in memory of Les, as part of the Kenyan Schools Project (KSP).

Les, 74, of Coedpoeth, died from cancer last Friday.

He worked for the Leader for more than three decades andwas known throughout Wrexham, particularly for his picture coverage of Wrexham FC.

Bill and Lynn Morris, from Shropshire, who founded the KSP in 2004, were inspired to have the desk made after meeting Les a couple of years ago.

Mr Morris said: “Wrexham FC donated some kit to the children and we had some photos taken at The Racecourse by Les.

“He was such a good character. I met him again in Ellesmere last year taking some pictures and we had a good chat. When I found out he’d passed away, I thought it would be a nice thing to do.”

Mr Morris said the desk would have a positive impact on the lives of the pupils and he hoped it would become part of a lasting legacy.

“I hope it helps lessen the heartache to know Les is helping kids out there,” he said.

“It all came together quite quickly - using WhatsApp I could message our carpenter over there to get the desk made, have it delivered, and a picture sent back from the headmaster of the school within days.

“Hopefully people will see it as a nice little tribute, and shows how much people thought of him.”

l The funeral service for Les and the committal will take place on Monday at Pentrebychan Crematorium, Wrexham, at 10am.

There are family flowers only. Donations in memory may be given via the Offertory Plate towards the work of Nightingale House Hospice.
