Wrexham player-boss Andy Morrell pointed to the return of goalkeeper Joslain Mayebi as the highlight of Saturday’s 6-1 thumping of St Mirren Under-20s.

Mayebi has been sidelined since January with an Achilles injury, but returned to keep a clean sheet in the second-half of Saturday’s convincing victory.

“We had Jossy back for the first time since January and great to see him playing,” said Morrell, who struck an impressive volley to add his name to the scoresheet. “He has had a mixed summer with his rehab, thinking he was ahead of where he actually was.

“But he has come back, worked hard and nice to see him back between the sticks.
“He will just get better and better, strong and stronger, and he has put a bit of upper body on, so looks even stronger now.

“He just needs a few games and hopefully will be good to go.”

Striker Andy Bishop marked his permanent switch to Wrexham with two goals and an assist in an impressive first-half display.

Bishop, signed by Wrexham from Bury last Tuesday, controlled a Johnny Hunt cross before laying the ball off for Joe Clarke, who checked onto his weaker left foot before firing in the opener.

Clarke repaid the favour for Bishop seven minutes later as he broke down the left and sent in a low cross for his team mate to tap home from close range.

Jay Harris created Bishop’s second, the midfielder stealing the ball off a St Mirren defender before feeding the 30-year-old, who finished with confidence.

It was a similar story after the interval as the new-look Wrexham side added three more goals, two of which came from midfielder Jay Colbeck.

The youngster wasted little time in curling home his first after good combination play between Neil Ashton and Nick Rushton, while Colbeck completed the scoring with a cool finish from a Morrell pass.

In between Colbeck’s strikes, Morrell scored the goal of the game as he sent a dipping volley from an Adrian Cieslewicz pass over Kieran Hughes.

Wrexham carved out plenty more chances with Cieslewicz, Harris, and Mark Creighton, who seemed adamant that his strike had crossed the line, all going close.

Morrell was understandably pleased with the six goals, insisting: “(It was) a good work out and good to get 45 minutes for everyone.

“(It was) nice to a score a few goals and I was pleased to get off the mark.

“We looked a bit sharper than we were last week, so we are moving in the right direction.”

The only blot on Wrexham’s copybook was the goal scored by St Mirren’s Lewis McLear, who finished emphatically after a series of defensive mistakes from the Reds.
