AN UNDERPASS in Broughton is to have a face lift thanks to the efforts of teenagers and older people working in harmony.

Village PCSO Jason Knowles applied to the Welsh Assembly Government for a Community Cohesion Grant as the underpass running under the A55 link road was in desperate need of a makeover.

PCSO Knowles was awarded £1,000 to fund the project and now wants to get Broughton youths working alongside older residents to produce a mural the whole community can take pride in.

He said: “The underpass is not very welcoming. I was aware that on occasions youngsters would sometimes gather in the underpass, not that they were doing anything wrong, but older people may have been intimidated by their presence.

“We decided it would be a good idea to get members of Broughton Youth Club working alongside older residents to produce a mural depicting historical scenes by way of a time-line running the length of the underpass.

“We have a graffiti artist coming along to run a workshop and I want to see as many older people as possible working alongside youngsters to produce something special.

“We haven’t yet decided on what should be included in the mural and we are looking for ideas.”

Age Concern North East Wales is supporting the project.

The charity’s chief executive officer Margaret Hanson said: “We would always support any scheme that sees older people working alongside youngsters in a positive way. It is a great way for people of different generations to understand and appreciate each other.

“A scheme such as this also gives older people an opportunity to keep and remain active something that is very important to the general well-being of older people.”
