A WREXHAM muscle man has been crowned Mr Wales and will now take part in the final of a top British bodybuilding competition.

Andy Davies came first in the novice category at the Wales heat of the National Amateur British Bodybuilding Association annual competition and he is now one of the main contenders for the British title.

An avid health and fitness fanatic from a young age, Andy, 39, started working out at the gym regularly when he was 18.

But it was not until just over a year ago, as a result of continuous support from friends and family, that he decided to begin competing.

Now, he is gearing up for his toughest challenge yet.

He said: “It’s fantastic that I’ve got this far, especially as I only started entering competitions last year.

“I’d never really thought of competing before but then I decided to enter the Vyomax Classic heats which were held in Wrexham and I came second, although everyone thought I should’ve won first place.

“It was just something I thought I should do before I was 40.”

Following his success at the Welsh regional heat, held on Barry Island last weekend, Andy will now travel to Southport’s Floral Pavilion for the final on Saturday.

Andy, who trains at Valhalla Gym on Rhosddu Industrial Estate, admits he will have to work hard to be in with a chance on the national stage but he is certain he has what it takes.

He said: “I’m very confident now.

“It’s going to be very tough but I’m in good shape and my diet’s going well.”

Andy added he has a strong network of family and friends who are backing him all the way including his wife Shereen Edwards and daughter Ceara Davies, 13.
“They’re very proud of me and it gives me a real boost to know they’re there for me.”
