A GROUP of walkers battled torrential weather conditions to complete a triple challenge in memory of a much-loved grandfather.

The intrepid walkers tackled the three highest peaks in the UK, Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon, in less than 24 hours.

Nichola Davies, 30, of Connah’s Quay, her brother Matthew Jones, 28, his partner Kelly Roberts, both of Kinmel Bay, completed the trek along with friend Jonathan Roberts, of Connah’s Quay, in memory of Nichola and Matthew’s grandfather Percy Stranks who died aged 84 after a 10-year battle with cancer.

Their efforts raised more than £2,000 for Cancer Research UK.

Former Holywell High School pupil Nichola said: “There were torrential weather conditions, but that never dampened our spirit. We all knew that we were going to complete this challenge as it was in memory of our grandfather.”

The group, along with volunteer drivers Lyndsey Hatton and Jo-Anne Roberts, started at the base of Ben Nevis and finished at the summit of Snowdon 23 hours and 41 minutes later.

Nichola said: “To finish was brilliant, I really could not believe it. We were really proud.

“Our granddad had cancer on and off for 10 years. His loss was devastating for the whole family, he is much missed. We only did it because he would have loved us to do it. He loved a challenge.”

Ellesmere Port Scania paid for the use of a Land Rover and contributed towards the £200 diesel costs with help from Deeside firm Cambrian Gas and Protech from Sandycroft.
