SOLDIERS who served on the front line in Afghanistan have been given a heroes’ welcome at Chirk Golf Club.
Members of the 1st Battalion Royal Welsh Fusiliers were greeted by course owner Guy Myddelton as they were given free access to the club’s par-three course as part of their rest and recuperation programme.
The Chester-based Fusiliers, who finished their tour on May 20, had served in the searing heat of Helmand Province with soldiers from Estonia.
Corporal Justin Barrett of Camarthen said: “I think we are making progress out
there, taking the fight to the Taliban.
“When we first got back, it was difficult but after a while you do settle back in.
“It is good to just relax, get out on the golf course and just enjoy it.”
Mr Myddelton said he had been contacted by the battalion’s chaplain and had been only too happy to help.
He added: “We have already been supporting the Help for Heroes so it was a natural thing that we would want to support the Fusiliers.
“It was appropriate because it is a Welsh regiment and we are a Welsh golf course which happens to be near the battalion’s base.”
