A PENSIONER died and two women were seriously injured in a crash.

Emergency crews were called to the two-car smash between a Mercedes and a Renault Clio on the A548 Coast Road near the Lletty Hotel in Mostyn shortly before 11.30am yesterday.

The Mercedes driver, a man in his eighties, was pronounced dead at the scene and two elderly female casualties were rushed to hospital.

A spokesman for the Welsh Ambulance Service said: “We were called at 11.19am to a two vehicle road traffic collision on the Mostyn Coast Road.

“Three ambulances, the North Wales Air Ambulance and a duty ambulance officer attended the incident.

“A male in his eighties was declared dead at the scene.

“An 81-year-old female was taken by air to Ysbyty Glan Clwyd with a broken leg and suffering from back pain.

“An elderly female with a suspected neck injury was taken by road, also to Ysbyty Glan Clwyd.”

Roadworks have been in place in Mostyn for several months while workers lay electrical cable.

Mostyn councillor Patrick Heesom told the Leader: “The roadworks can be very disorienting for drivers. There is a big congestion problem on that road at the moment.

“There have been fatalities on that road before because it carries very heavy traffic. Now that the weather is getting nicer everybody is using the coast road instead of the A55.”

Fire crews were also at the scene at the request of the police and ambulance service.

A spokesman for North Wales Fire and Rescue said: “There were multiple vehicles involved and multiple casualties. We made the vehicles electrically safe.”

The road was closed for the afternoon while police made inquiries.

Police are appealing for witnesses to the crash to call the non-emergency number 101.
