THE main road between North Wales and Shropshire is likely to remain closed for several days while it is made safe following a fatal collision.

Two men were killed in the crash, which happened just after 4.15pm yesterday on the A5 viaduct near Chirk.

A silver Mercedes E200 estate car, a double decker Volvo livestock carrier and a Volvo tanker lorry were involved in the collision which happened just inside the Shropshire border.

The two men who died were the drivers of the Mercedes and the livestock lorry. The driver of the tanker was treated for a minor head injury.

A police spokeswoman said: “The A5 over the viaduct is expected to remain closed for at least two to three days.

"This is for safety reasons while repairs to the bridge barriers are carried out.

“All the agencies involved are working together to get the road open as quickly as possible but this cannot take place until it is safe.

"Diversions have been put in place while the road is closed and we would urge drivers to find an alternative route if possible.

“Work is continuing to remove the vehicles from the carriageway.”

Witnesses should call Oswestry Police Station as a matter of urgency on 0300 333 3000.
