WREXHAM beat Boston United 3-0 at The Racecourse to reach the second round of the FA Trophy.

Early goals by returning strikers Chris Holroyd and Mike Fondop inside the opening 10 minutes put Wrexham, again led by interim manager Graham Barrow, in control and there was no way back for National League North side Boston after Paul Rutherford added a third before half-time.

Promotion remains the priority but Wrexham, knocked out of the FA Cup at Newport four days earlier, are still involved in one cup competition.

The starting line-up showed five changes from the side that lost at Newport, with Barrow resting players, others missing out through injury and Luke Young starting a suspension.

Christian Dibble, making his first appearance of the season, Brad Walker, Nicky Deverdics, Fondop and Holroyd came into the team in place of Rob Lainton, Shaun Pearson, Young, Bobby Grant and Stuart Beavon.

Wrexham got off to a perfect start by taking the lead with just 58 seconds on the clock following a well worked move.

Deverdics seized upon Fondop's header and laid off to Paul Rutherford whose cross was converted by Holroyd.

It got even better for the Reds who made it 2-0 in the 10th minute.

Rutherford centred and Fondop slotted home to score his first goal since the end of August.

There was another chance for Holroyd who fired across the face of goal while Boston went close when Nicky Walker's cross was flicked on by Gavin Allott but the ball ran just beyond Ryan Qualter in the six yard box.

Boston were enjoying a superb spell and Allott's header deflected out for a corner from which the striker planted another header wide from an excellent position.

However, Wrexham countered and extended their lead on 32 minutes.

Deverdics threaded a pass through to Rutherford who ran through on goal and beat goalkeeper George Willis.

It remained 3-0 at the break while Boston had the first chance of the second half, Walker bringing a first save out of Dibble from Allott's cross.

Akil Wright cleared the bar for Wrexham who were in a comfortable position and seeing out the game.

James Jennings' drive was parried by Willis while Dibble did well to save Jay Rollins' shot at the other end.

Fondop's late drive was turned behind by Willis but Wrexham had already done enough.
