GRAHAM BARROW labelled Luke Young’s sending off at Newport County as the “worst scenario” of any red card he’s had to deal with in his entire career.

With the FA Cup second round replay goalless and finely poised after just 13 minutes, Wrexham midfielder Young was shown a straight red card after he was adjudged to have recklessly tackled Mickey Demetriou.

Barrow has been involved in the game for 40 years as a player, coach and manager, and the 64-year-old was unable to recollect a more hurtful dismissal.

Having had plenty of time to reflect on the decision made by referee Kevin Johnson, Barrow said: “I was thinking through all the games I’ve been in as a player, manager and coach when you’ve been down to 10-men and it’s the worst scenario.

“It’s not an excuse, but we are 12 minutes into a cup tie where there has to be a result on the night.

“The saddest thing is that we will never know (how we would have done with 11 men).

“We started off well and it was a big game. That’s the most disappointing thing. All of the preparation you’ve thought about from playing last week and they’ve changed their system out of respect to what we’d done.

“We were ready for it and changed our system a little bit and all that went in the dustbin after the red card.”

Barrow insists that Wrexham will review footage of the game - which had not arrived from Rodney Parade by mid-afternoon yesterday - before deciding whether to appeal the sending off.

“They are looking at it, but I just think that in those tackling situations they tend to back the referee,” he continued.

“We will certainly have a good look at it, but only because of the damage to Youngy really. Considering he had shinpads on he’s got massive scars down both shins. My view is that he got the ball and then the lad who was injured saw him coming and his feet went higher than Youngy’s, and it had to be both feet.

“Sadly, I think that’s the way football is going. If they are not careful it will be a non-contact sport.

“It’s not just the damage it does to us (on Tuesday), but there is a possibility of a three-game ban, which is an absolute nightmare with the Christmas games and the situation we are in. He’s a big player for us. It doesn’t just end there when we’ve been badly done to during the game.”

Asked whether he had chance to speak with Mr Johnson after the game, which ended in a 4-0 defeat for Wrexham, Barrow added: “I learned a few years ago, it took me a while to learn, not to swear because there is nothing they can do with you.

“I treat them with the upmost respect and I got my point across.”
