LUKE YOUNG has enjoyed the magic of the cup but the midfielder insists Wrexham won’t take the foot off the gas in the league.

Sunday’s 2-0 win at Weston-super-Mare secured a place in the second round of the FA Cup where Wrexham will host League Two Newport County, with the game taking place on Saturday December 1.

National League leaders Wrexham have three games before the all-Welsh showdown, starting with tomorrow's clash at Maidstone United, and Young is focussed on maintaining the promotion challenge.

“We have got a couple of weeks before the next round of the cup and our focus now is on the league,” said Young.

“We are in a great position at the top of the league and we have got three league games now to try and keep that momentum going.

“That is our sole focus now for the next couple of weeks.

“We go to Maidstone and hopefully we can get the three points that will keep us at the top of the league.”

But Young is delighted Wrexham have managed to make cup progress.

“When you have got a cup game it takes a little bit of distraction away from the league which can be a nice distraction,” said Young.

“We were in form in the league so it could have given us a bit of a set-back and a bit of a loss of confidence but luckily for us that didn’t happen.

“Whether it is a cup game or the league, as long as you get the momentum of winning it is key.”

Reds’ boss Sam Ricketts believes Maidstone are a side on the up and does not expect them to be dragged back into trouble.

“Maidstone are on a decent run to be fair to them,” said Ricketts. “They had a really good win at Barnet and obviously a good win against Macclesfield in the cup.

“They are a side on the up, they are not struggling going down the table. I see them more coming up the table, especially on the back of a few good results.”
