LUKE YOUNG has called on Wrexham to park their FA Cup exploits ahead of a hat-trick of crunch National League fixtures.

Young revelled in Tuesday’s 2-0 fourth qualifying round replay win over visiting Harrogate, but his attentions quickly turned to bread and butter of the league.

Second placed Wrexham visit Chesterfield on Saturday, before entertaining Hartlepool on Tuesday and Gateshead in nine day’s time.

And Young knows that nine points would be the perfect way to head into the FA Cup first round trip to Weston-Super-Mare.

“It’s nice to get into the first round and hopefully we can progress further because everyone knows it’s a magical competition,” he said.

“We’ve got to make sure we are ready for that game, but our first thought now is about Saturday and we’ve got to try and put this to the back of our minds now.

“We’ve got three big games coming up which we want to try and get as many points as we can from and then have a nice little break with the FA Cup.”

Young, who added a calmly taken second to Akil Wright’s opener as Harrogate’s resistance was finally ended at The Racecourse, continued: “You could say the FA Cup is a nice distraction from the league, but our form in the league has been very good and we’ve got three league games coming up which we need to capitalise on.

“I don’t think anyone wants a replay as such, but bringing them here we knew we would have a good chance and that’s done now and we head to Chesterfield on Saturday.”

Chesterfield have failed to hit the heights expected of them under Martin Allen this term, the Spireites languishing in 19th place after 16 games.

But Young knows Saturday’s hosts, who have drawn their last three league matches before beating Fylde 3-1 in the FA Cup last weekend, won’t be pushovers.

“They are an ex-league club, so it’s never going to be easy,” he said.

“Their league position probably doesn’t do them any justice and it’s never going to be an easy game, so we will go there full of confidence and there is no reason why we can’t come away with a positive result.

“It’s going to be tough, but we’ve got the confidence from the last four, five or six games. We know we can compete and we’ve got to go there and be solid.”

Young will be hoping to continue his scoring form at the Proact Stadium after netting twice in the last three outings.

The 25-year-old followed up his superb strike against Dagenham with a composed finish from the edge of the area against Harrogate.

“It’s only two in the last three games, so I won’t be getting carried away, but it’s always nice to score and be part of a winning team and help the lads get through to the next round,” reflected Young.

“It was nice to get the goal, but first and foremost it was important to get through to the first round proper.”

Young swept the ball home after good work from substitute Mike Fondop, who earned the praise of the midfielder.

He continued: “Mike did very well, he held it up very well after getting in behind and unselfishly laid it off to me on the edge of the box.

“The pace was on the ball and all I had to do was use that pace and guide it into the bottom corner. Thankfully it went in.

“Mike did brilliantly, he did all of the hard work.

“I’ve had a bit of confidence from the goal at Dagenham and the gaffer keeps telling me to shoot when I can, not willy-nilly, but when I can.”
