AKIL WRIGHT will never forget his first Wrexham goal - because he’s got a battle wound to mark the occasion.

Wright acrobatically turned home Luke Young’s inswinging corner to finally break Harrogate’s resistance and set Wrexham on their way to the first round of the FA Cup.

The 22-year-old’s night was ended abruptly as he was forced off after taking an elbow to the head, which needed seven stitches, but that failed to wipe the smile off his face.

“I can’t forget that one can I!” declared Wright, who continued: “It was a left-foot swinger and luckily it went in.

“As you could see when I scored I was relieved. Overall it’s pleasing for myself and we got the win, which is the main thing.”

Wright has been talking about breaking his Wrexham goal duck for a while now, but any pre-planned celebrations were quickly forgotten as the ball hit the net.

He said: “I’ve looked up and it’s gone in. The lads were all swarming around me and I didn’t know what to do, I was overwhelmed. I had a few celebrations going on, but the fist pump at the end was the main one. I was buzzing to score.”

On his exit from the field, which brought about eight minutes of added on time, Wright added: “It wasn’t on purpose. He’s gone for the header and caught me with his elbow. I didn’t know I was bleeding until the keeper said.

“I was fine, a bit light headed so I couldn’t carry on, but I should be fine for the weekend.”
