AKIL WRIGHT has developed a taste for goals and the midfielder is looking to beat last season's tally when Wrexham kick-off a 12th campaign in non-league.

Wright finished 2018-19 as joint-top goalscorer at The Racecourse alongside Shaun Pearson, Mike Fondop and Stuart Beavon, the quartet all finding the back of the net six times.

While Wrexham lacked a prolific striker, Wright can be pleased with his quota given the fact he failed to find the back of the net at all during the previous season.

But Wright, who scored in the opening 4-0 friendly win at Cefn Druids, is striving to surpass that total.

"I got five league goals last season and one in the cup so to beat that is probably my main aim," said Wright, who scored in Wrexham's opening pre-season friendly against Cefn Druids at the end of June.

"I should have got a lot more goals, we all know that. It didn't happen but I got six - and I had zero the season before!

"I go again and hopefully I will get more than six. Every season you have got to try and improve and I am looking to do that again.

"My overall game as a midfielder, I am going to work on things like getting better on the ball in pre-season; come back ready and be sharp enough."

Wright made 43 league appearances last term, an increase on his first campaign at The Racecourse.

Manager Bryan Hughes has strengthened his squad following Wrexham's play-off heartbreak and Wright, along with his fellow midfielders, face competition from new signings Devonte Redmond and Adam Barton, and first year pros Matty Sargent and Jack Thorn, something the 23-year-old has welcomed.

"We have brought in some very good players and it is more competition for the players that were here last season," said Wright

"They obviously bring something to the team that we have got already.

"Everyone is pushing each other and I am looking forward to it.

"Everyone is fighting for their positions so hopefully I will be on the team-sheet come August 3."
