WREXHAM are now the team to catch in the race for the National League title and Kieran Kennedy wants to keep it that way.

The Reds go into tomorrow's game against Gateshead at The International Stadium as leaders for the first time since early November after beating Boreham Wood 2-0 on Tuesday.

That was the fourth victory in a row and with just 12 games to go, centre-back Kennedy says the onus is on Wrexham to keep picking up wins so they don't have to worry about their promotion rivals' results.

"Confidence is a big thing in football and the lads are definitely confident," said Kennedy.

"We have just gone top of the league so everyone is keen to stay there, and hopefully get the club back where it belongs.

"Post Christmas, everyone has been beating everyone so it is our job now to hopefully try and gain a bit of a gap, and go on and win the title.

"We just need to concentrate on our game now, then we know we don't need to look at other results.

"As long as we win, we know where we are so hopefully we can do that."

Gateshead are play-off contenders but Kennedy says Wrexham are focussed on making in three away wins in eight days.

"Every game in this league is tough," said Kennedy.

"But we will be going there to play our game and hopefully get the three points."

Kennedy, who joined Wrexham in January after leaving Shrewsbury, made his first start at Boreham Wood with influential captain Shaun Pearson missing with a back injury sustained in Saturday's win at Havant and Waterlooville.

They were big boots to fill but Kennedy came through with flying colours and he was delighted to play his part in the win.

"Shaun has been playing really well," said Kennedy.

"He is obviously our captain and he led the players by example at Havant with his goal to get us back into it.

"I knew I couldn't let anyone down and obviously let Shaun down because they are top of the table.

"I was pleased with how I played but it is about the team. A lot of the lads were out there helping me through the game.

"I had Jake Lawlor next to me, James Jennings, Mark Carrington, and Rob Lainton at the back, so it was really good to be out there.

"Centre-halves always like the clean sheet, that is like scoring for us, so me and Jake are buzzing with that."

Manager Bryan Hughes, who celebrated a third successive win since he took charge, always knew he could depend on Kennedy.

"Kieran was outstanding," said Hughes. "Him and Jake, the whole of the back four, absolutely outstanding performance.

"You keep clean sheets and you don't lose games, it is as simple as that, and that is what we have done.

"Kieran has come in, big boots to fill in the captain of the team, but our squad is strong.

"I am very fortunate to have a strong squad coming here as manager and I had no hesitation in putting Kieran in.

"I knew he would come good and that's what he did."

On-loan winger Ben Tollitt, who has started all three games under Hughes, scored both goals and earned praise from his manager.

"Ben is a talented player, that is why we have kept him for another 28 days," said Hughes.

"He gives us something different to what we have already got. He takes us up the pitch, he is a goal threat, he can create like he showed on Saturday, so I am delighted for Ben.

"He has shown his commitment, he wants to stay here at the club and he has got his rewards."
