BRYAN HUGHES insists the players deserve all the credit after putting Wrexham top of the National League.

The Reds beat Boreham Wood 2-0 on Tuesday and go into tomorrow's match against Gateshead at The International Stadium holding a one point lead over Solihull Moors with 12 games to go.

Wrexham have won their last four games with three coming under Hughes, who has made a whirlwind start to life in The Racecourse hotseat, but you won't see him taking the plaudits.

"These players deserve to have all the credit," said Hughes.

"I am just guiding them; me, Carl Darlington, Jussi Jääskeläinen and the rest of the coaching team, we are all just guiding them in the right direction.

"They are the ones who are out there putting the shift in, crossing that white line and providing everything that we are seeing now.

"We are getting goals and we are keeping clean sheets, we are just putting them in the right areas."

Hughes insists he is not feeling the pressure in the race for automatic promotion where Wrexham face stiff competition from a number of teams.

"I feel very calm," said Hughes.

"It is always helpful when you are winning games but I am a very calm person anyway.

"I like to just take everything in my stride.

"As long as I can get my message across to the players and they perform week in, week out, I will be happy with that."

Wrexham, who secured a first away win in the league since October after beating Havant and Waterloovile 3-2 on Saturday, are targeting a third successive victory on their travels, in eight days, at Gateshead.

Hughes admits it would be fantastic to make if the 'perfect nine' but knows play-off contenders Gateshead will be tough opponents.

"We want to come away at 5pm with nine points," said Hughes. "But we are no fools, we know it is going to be difficult.

"Gateshead away is always a difficult place to go, they are right up there in the league.

"We will prepare, we will plan and go there full of confidence.

"These two away games on the spin that we have just taken six points from will give us that confidence going to Gateshead.

"Now it is just about everything falling in the right place, and hopefully we get the performance and get the result."
