A SECOND half double from Ben Tollitt fired Wrexham to the top of the National League.

Winger Tollitt, who has extended his loan spell from Tranmere Rovers for another 28 days, started a third game in a row since Bryan Hughes took over as manager and his goals helped Wrexham beat Boreham Wood 2-0.

This was the Reds' fourth successive win and took Hughes' men above Solihull Moors to the summit.

Wrexham, who last held the lead at the start of November, produced a battling performance to maintain their 100 per cent record at Meadow Park.

Mid-table Boreham Wood were smarting from Saturday's 4-0 home defeat against Hartlepool but Wrexham's professional display heaped more misery on the hosts and boosted the Reds' promotion hopes.

Hughes, still without a number of players through illness and injury, was forced into one change from the side that started Saturday's 3-2 win at Havant and Waterlooville.

Captain Shaun Pearson failed to recover from a back problem sustained in the first away victory in the league since October 13 and was replaced in defence by January signing Kieran Kennedy.

Former Shrewsbury man Kennedy was making his first Wrexham start after appearing as a substitute against the Hawks, so teenager Doug Tharme took his place on the bench.

Mark Carrington, captain for the night in the absence of Pearson, did well to prevent last man Sorba Thomas getting a sight of goal as the Wood made a promising start.

Wrexham began to settle into their stride and forced a couple of corners which came to nothing.

Neither side had a chance of note in the opening 20 minutes but that quickly changed.

Wood striker Ralston Gabriel raced onto a ball over the top and beat Jake Lawlor for pace but his effort was brilliant turned behind for a corner by Reds' goalkeeper Rob Lainton.

Lainton made a comfortable stop to keep out ex-Wrexham defender Jamal Fyfield's header from a corner, while the Reds created their first real opportunity three minutes before the break.

Luke Young sent in a cross and Jason Oswell's header was palmed away by Wood goalkeeper Ryan Huddart.

Wrexham

Wrexham made a strong finish to the half and good build-up play led to Brad Walker's effort deflected wide for a corner from which Kennedy headed back into the danger zone but the Wood cleared the lines for another flag-kick, and it remained goalless at the break.

Kennedy made a vital block to deny Keiran Murtagh at the start of the second half while Walker was unable to keep a shot down at the other end.

But Wrexham made it 1-0 in the 55th minute.

Akil Wright was unable to connect with Oswell's cross but the ball fell for Tollitt who swept the ball home.

It got even better for Wrexham who doubled their lead on 65 minutes.

Tollitt raced onto Oswell's flick and fired home for his and Wrexham's second goal.

There was a good chance to make it 3-0 but Oswell fired over from Wright's pull-back but there was a scare for Wrexham as sub Bradley Ash's cross flew across goal and fell narrowly wide.

Hughes made his first change after 71 minutes with Cole Stockton replacing Oswell, and Chris Holroyd soon came on for Tollitt.

Wright's header was saved by Huddart but the Wood weren't done and Lainton did well to tip Justin Shaibu's header over the bar.

But Wrexham saw out the game and are the new leaders.

Wrexham (4-2-3-1): Lainton; Carrington, Lawlor. Kennedy, Jennings; Young, Walker; Rutherford, Wright, Tollitt (Holroyd 78); Oswell (Stockton 71). Subs: Dibble, Tharme, Deverdics.
