WREXHAM will go top of the National League with victory at Boreham Wood tonight but Shaun Pearson insists sitting in pole position at the end of the season matters most.

Bryan Hughes' side head to Meadow Park on the back of a three-game winning run which leaves the second placed Reds just two points behind leaders Solihull Moors.

Victory in their game in hand against the Wood will take Wrexham to the summit but captain Pearson prefers to look at the bigger picture.

"That will be pleasing but it is a tough place to go, they are a good side, but hopefully we can get a positive result," said Pearson.

"A lot of people will be looking at top spot and want to be top.

"As long as we are top at the end of the season, that is all that really matters.

"Hopefully we can keep this little winning run going."

Wrexham's promotion rivals dropped points on Saturday while the Reds triumphed 3-2 at Havant and Waterlooville, but Pearson insists nothing can be taken for granted in the fifth tier.

"It just shows how competitive this league is," said Pearson.

"You look at some games and think 'that is a definite home win' or 'they will go there and win', but it doesn't work like that at all.

"Every game in this division is a difficult one, we have found that out ourselves, but the pleasing thing is we are bang in the mix.

"Hopefully we can keep taking advantage when other teams do slip up and we can be the ones that put that run together to open up a little gap at the top end."

Pearson was delighted to start a run of three away games in eight days with a win at Havant, with the trip to Boreham Wood followed by Saturday's clash at Gateshead, and he is targeting a "healthy points return" from the matches.

"It is a big week, a tough week, and getting three points sets you up nicely," said Pearson.

"We want a healthy points return from the three games.

"We will be going into every game to win but as long as we come out with a healthy points return, we will be pleased going into the last 11 games knowing we have got six at home and only five away, and in with a good chance."

Wrexham trailed 1-0 at the break at Havant but three goals in the opening 15 minutes of the second half paved the way for a first away win in the league since October 13.

It was also the first time this season Wrexham have come from behind to win and Pearson admits it was a positive day all round in the race for the title.

"There are so many things we can be really pleased with and hopefully take a lot of belief from moving forward," said Pearson, who scored the equaliser,

"It was the first time we have come from behind to win which is huge for us because we are probably going to go behind between now and the end of the season.

"When that does happen, hopefully we can have that same belief and show that we can come from behind and win games.

"I thought we played some good stuff first half. We just said that we have to stick at it and it will go in for us sooner rather than later, and thankfully I managed to get my head on one.

"After that we steam-rolled them for 15 minutes, it was a bit backs-to-the-wall at the end but we got the win."
