PAUL RUTHERFORD'S goal earned Wrexham a 1-0 victory over Solihull Moors at The Racecourse.

Three days after thrashing title rivals Salford City 5-1 at home, Wrexham secured another huge win against high-flying Solihull in front of another fantastic crowd.

Graham Barrow's Wrexham remain second in the National League, just one point behind leaders Leyton Orient and with a game in hand ahead of the Salford rematch on New Year's Day.

Barrow, unsurprisingly, named the same side that thrashed Salford City on Boxing Day.

There was two changes on the substitutes bench with the fit-again Kevin Roberts and Luke Young, back from suspension, replacing, Manny Smith and Nicky Deverdics.

Darren Carter only just cleared the bar with an early effort for Solihull but Wrexham came more into the contest and almost took an 11th minute lead following a well worked move.

Bobby Grant took down Jake Lawlor's cross and pulled the ball back for James Jennings whose cross was headed over the bar by Akil Wright from an excellent position.

Nathan Blissett fired narrowly wide for Solihull while Wright, again getting into the danger zone, put a glancing header wide from Mark Carrington's centre.

Rob Lainton got down well to make a smart save to deny Carter, while Wright was in the right place again but couldn't keep his shot down as the game swung from end to end.

Grant was denied by the Solihull defence as he attempted to meet Stuart Beavon's cross and after a bright spell by Solihull, Brad Walker's effort found the arms of Moors keeper Ryan Boot who made his first save of the game.

Solihull came close to taking the lead in first half added time but Carter's drive was cleared off the line by Jennings.

Wrexham made a bright start after the interval and went on 49 minutes.

Jennings made inroads down the left, his cross was touched on by Beavon and Rutherford converted from close range.

Luke Maxwell and ex-Wrexham midfielder Kyle Storer failed to hit the target as Solihull regrouped, while Barrow made his first substitution in the 67th minute with Young replacing Beavon.

There was a let-off for Wrexham when Alex Gudger put a free header wide from Jamie Reckford's cross, while Wrexham responded with Wright bringing a comfortable save out of Boot.

Ben Tollitt replaced Luke Summerfield with 11 minutes to go while Wrexham again breathed a sigh of relief after failing to clear the danger as Solihull pressed for an equaliser, Gudger firing wide from a good position.

Roberts came on for Brad Walker in the closing minutes and Tollitt forced a save out of Boot, but Solihull had another good opening but Matt Stenson fired wide.

There was more late pressure from Salford but Wrexham held on to secure another win.
