AKIL WRIGHT says Wrexham's stunning victory over Salford is a massive statement of intent.

The Reds triumphed 5-1 at The Racecourse on Boxing Day and moved up to second place in the National League, three points behind leaders Leyton Orient with a game in hand.

It was Wrexham's biggest win of the season and Wright believes it will have made other teams sit up and take notice, but the midfielder knows the Reds face another tough test against fourth placed Solihull Moors this afternoon.

"It is a massive statement for us," said Wright. "Our results against the top-six haven't been the best so it was a massive statement.

"We have just got to keep going, and we have got a game in hand as well so we have got to keep plugging away and keep in touch with Leyton Orient.

"Hopefully come April we will be at the top.

"Obviously results went our way as well so it is a positive and we take that into Saturday's game which will be another tough game for us.

"Solihull won on Boxing Day as well so it is a huge game and then Salford away which is a massive six-pointer."

Shaun Pearson gave Wrexham the perfect start with the Reds skipper scoring after just three minutes.

Wright doubled the lead and Brad Walker made it 3-0 before half-time, with debutant Ben Tollitt and fellow substitute Chris Holroyd scoring late goals to wrap up three points after Salford were left with 10 men.

Wright admits the game was effectively over at the break with Wrexham in such a commanding position.

"We won the game in the first half really," said Wright.

"Second half was a bit tough, when you are 3-0 up you don't want to get complacent and I thought we let them into the game a bit second half.

"But we got that killer goal and from then on it was comfortable."

Wrexham caused big spending Salford all sorts of problems in the first half.

"From when we scored the first goal they started to get a bit frustrated," said Wright.

"We just kept doing what we were doing. We were hurting their defence, especially Stuart Beavon, and causing them massive problems.

"Overall we just outplayed them.

"It was a great performance and we have got to keep that going now."

Wright, who opened his Wrexham account in October's FA Cup win against Harrogate, was delighted to get his first league goal for the club after he was denied by the goalkeeper in Saturday's goalless draw at Aldershot.

"It was a massive relief, especially after Saturday," said Wright.

"I have been frustrated the last couple of weeks, I have had chances to be fair but thankfully it went in.

"It would have been nice to score on Saturday but I suppose I made up for it with that goal.

"Most importantly we won as well so it is a bonus scoring, it has been a good Boxing Day."

Wright is given licence to get forward and support attacks and believes he should be on the scoresheet more often.

"I should get more goals," added Wright.

"I am getting in the box more often now so hopefully I kick on now and get a few more."
