DEAN KEATES expects to have a full-strength squad at his disposal to boost Wrexham's promotion challenge going into the business end of the campaign.

Although Theo Vassell made his comeback from an ankle injury in Saturday's 4-1 win against Wealdstone - the centre-back will now serve a one-match ban following his sending off - captain Shaun Pearson has been restricted to just three appearances this season because of a foot problem while goalkeeper Rob Lainton (backside) has missed the last eight games.

However, the duo are closing in on a welcome return as fifth placed Wrexham, who have 19 matches remaining, aim to be in the promotion mix.

And having Pearson and Lainton available is some comfort to Keates who is only able to bring in free agents now that the transfer window closed and cannot sign loan players unlike the Reds' National League rivals.

"As a group we can't add unless they were unattached players before the window closed," said Keates.

"You will see a lot of teams in our division now taking players who have not been released but on loan from National League North or South teams, but we are not in a position to do that.

"But give it another week or two weeks, I reckon we will be at full strength going into the home straight, the back end of the season."

With Pearson last in action when Wrexham lost 2-0 at Stockport County on December 28, Mark Carrington has been used as a centre-back.

Keates heaped praise on Carrington, the longest serving player in the squad and now spending an eight season at The Racecourse.

"Carra has been absolutely outstanding," added Keates.

"Carra is Carra, he does everything for this football club and he has not looked out of place there.

"With his quality, he can play left-side or right-side. He is not as good with his left foot as his right but he is very comfortable on it."
