OWEN SMITH booked his place at the European Indoor Championships - and climbed up to second in Wales' all-time 400m ranking list in the process.

The Flintshire-raised athlete enjoyed a hugely successful British Indoor Championships, recording a personal best time of 46.37 in finishing second behind Cameron Chalmers, who snatched gold in 46.26.

That time and finishing position were enough to secure former Deeside runner Smith a place in Glasgow, where he will compete in the individual 400m and as part of Great Britain's 4x400m relay team.

The Championships start on Friday, March 1 with the heats in the morning and semi-finals in the evening with the final on Saturday night. The relays are to be held on Sunday evening.

Smith took to Twitter to congratulate Chalmers, and express his delight at a fine meeting in Birmingham.

He tweeted: "Congrats to @CamChalmers400, insane run

"Thank you to everyone for your messages today! An Indoor PB and a place for Glasgow, can’t ask for much more! A big thank you to the team behind the scenes, @mattelias400h and @adamrattenberry. Without these two none of that would have been possible! Thank you guys!"

As well as a silver medal and a spot in Team GB, Smith moved up to second in Wales' all-time indoor 400m times.

Smith is now only behind Jamie Baulch (45.39) in the ranking list.
