WREXHAM athlete Thomas Walley was crowned triple jump champion after a brilliant display at the Welsh Indoor Championships in Cardiff.

The 21-year-old posted a best distance of 14.44 metres from his five attempts to see of the challenge of Cardiff AC's Jeff Angila who fell short with his best leap of 13.89 metres.

Further success followed as Walley claimed a second-place finish in the long jump, where his best distance of 6.77 metres earned him a podium place.

Deeside athletes excelled in the capital too, with Thomas Maguire clinching gold in the U15M 300m final with a PB time of 39.07 seconds and taking top spot just ahead of Rhymney athlete William Hawker (39.29 seconds).

Clubmate Shannon Malone then took the U23W 60m sprint title with a new PB of 7.51 seconds to win gold, with Wrexham's Amy Odunaiaya also recording a best time of 7.79 seconds in the race.

Liam McGivern was in action at the Sheffield Festival of Athletics, where the Wrexham runner finished fourth in the senior men's 400m race with a time of 49.78 seconds.

Strong winds were not enough to prevent a record turnout of 372 runners at the latest Border Road Race League meeting in Tattenhall.

Buckley's Ricky Challinor ran strongly to finish second outright with a time 32:03 seeing him pipped to top spot by Wallasey's Joe Boden (32:00).

Deesider Lee Jones (33:14) was sixth, placing just ahead of Buckley's Elliot Cox (33:24) and Wrexham pair Daniel Weston (33:47) and Sam Sussex (33:55).

Also among the top 20 finishers were Wrexham's Darren Rowlands (34:48) in 12th , Buckley pair Simon O'Brien (34:50) and Jez Brown (34:59) in 14th and 15th respectively,Wrecsam Tri's Wilf Goodfellow (35:12) in 16th and Buckley's Sean Truett (35:15) in 18th.

Deeside runner Rheagan Edwards (39:59)was the third fastest female, finishing ahead Buckley runners duo Jen Adams (41:08) and Ceri Cook in fifth and seventh respectively.

The collective efforts of Buckley's male runners earned them top spot in the Division One men's team rankings.

In Division Two, Wrexham AC comfortably made their best scores of the season as they leapfrogged Chester Tri into second place.

Joel Gomes was second across the line at the Dash in the Dark in Llandegla, where the Wrexham man clocked 25:49 to place just behind Ambleseide AC winner Karl Steinegger (23:58) at the night time race.

Buckley Runners' Simon Edwards (27:05) was fourth as he beat clubmates Simon Roberts (28:03) and Steve Toogood (28:29) in ninth and 10th respectively, with Wrexham's Ian Atkinson (29:42) home in 14th place.

Gomes was also second quickest at the latest Erddig ParkRun as he clocked a PB of 18:15 on the 5k course; a time bettered only by unafilliated first-timer Llewelyn Roberts (17:40).

Wrexham's Andy Jones (19:20) was third, with teenage clubmate Harvey Davis (21:00) in sixth, Buckley's David Jones (22:01) 10th, Deesider Oliver Yandle (22:18 ) 11th, and Wrexham's Chad Owen (22:23) 12th.

Daniel Parkinson led the way at the Wepre ParkRun, where the Deeside AC teenager clocked 20:09 to see of the challenge of second-placed clubmate Stephen Jolly (20:56) and fourth-placed Buckley Runners man David Lyth (21:08).

Oswestry will host the latest North Wales Senior XC League meeting at 1pm on Saturday, while some of the the region's younger athletes are in action all weekend at the Welsh Junior Indoor Championships in Cardiff.
