Holywell Town's valiant survival battle ended in heartache after they were relegated on the final weekend of the Cymru Alliance campaign despite a 3-0 home victory over Holyhead Hotspur.

The Flintshire club's four-year stay in the second tier was ended in cruel fashion on a dramatic last day, in which Penrhyncoch conjured an 86th minute winner in their 3-2 victory over Conwy Borough to move a point clear of the bottom three.

The Roosters' result condemned both the Wellmen and Denbigh Town to likely relegation, with their fate to be determined by the licensing status of the promoted clubs from Tier Three.

It was an agonising 10 minute wait at full-time for Holywell's players, fans and boss John Haseldin who were left 'gutted' by the news that their dominant victory over Hotspur had been in vain.

Reflecting on the day's events, Haseldin said: "It was a torturous way to go down.

"Having played so well in atrocious weather conditions and got a massive win ourselves, it was devastating for us to realise it wasn't quite enough on the day.

"All of our focus was on our own game and our own performance, but afterwards when we heard that Conwy were 2-1 up late in the game we'd hoped we might get the rub of the green.

"It wasn't to be and I'm gutted for the players, for the fans and everyone involved with the club who've worked so hard.

"The stands were packed with supporters even though the weather was awful and we were desperate to stay up for them more than anyone else.

"It's been a big re-building job since I've come back in to try to get ourselves out of a bad situation.

"I'm proud of the players and what they've given me in these last few months. It's been a gallant effort, but it wasn't to be this season.

"You don't keep a good club down and I know we'll come back stronger after a setback like this."

Haseldin's side had turned in a dominant display at a rain-soaked and windswept Halkyn Road to collect three points from their clash with already-relegated Hotspur.

The hosts were ahead after just three minutes when, from a corner, Sam Jones delivered a perfect ball into the box and Jamie McCall headed home.

Sustained pressure saw the Wellmen double their lead on 15 minutes when Aaron Pomeyie picked up the ball on the edge of the box, and his looping curling shot flew into the top corner.

Zebb Edwards went close to making it 3-0 before the interval with a rasping drive that flew inches wide of the target.

The hosts had controlled the opening 45 minutes and their task was made easier soon after the restart when Hotspur were reduced to 10 men after Alex Jones was sent off for a foul on Edwards.

And the Wellmen capitalised soon after when Pomeyie grabbed his second of the game, firing low past the keeper.

Ultimately the day would end in frustration for the home side though as news filtered through of events in Penrhyncoch.

The Ceredigion club's relegation looked imminent after strikes from Dean Seager and Cory Williams handed Conwy a 2-1 lead at Cae Baker with nine minutes remaining.

But Jonathan Evans volleyed home an 82nd minute leveller before Josh Shaw netted a vital third to preserve his side's league status.
