Airbus midfielder Joe Palmer is out to end his League Cup hoodoo and collect an elusive winner’s medal this weekend.

Despite reaching the last three finals with former club Flint Town United, Palmer is yet to get his hands on the trophy.

Successive defeats to Caernarfon Town in the 2015/16 and 2016/17 seasons were disappointing enough for the 20-year-old, before a contractual issue meant he missed the Silkmen’s penalty shoot-out triumph over Gresford last term.

Since making the switch to county rivals Airbus last summer, and playing a key role in their league title success, Palmer now aims to help steer his to a memorable double against Holyhead Hotspur at Conwy on Saturday.

“It’s a strange one,” he said.

“Getting beaten by Caernarfon two seasons in a row was disappointing, but we were up against a very decent side in both finals.

“But then to miss last season’s final because of an off-the-field issue was massively disappointing and it’s something I want to put right this weekend.

“Both of the finals I’ve played in were at Conwy too, so hopefully it’s third time lucky and I’m on the right side of the result tomorrow afternoon.”

Airbus could become only the fifth team in the league’s history to win the double, with the Flintshire club out to build on a dominant campaign.

Standing in their way of silverware are relegated Hotspur, who are also out to land the trophy for the first time in their history.

The Anglesey club will finish the campaign rock bottom of the division, but Palmer insists that league position will have little bearing on the outcome at Y Morfa.

He added: “It’s a one-off game and winner-takes-all, so I don’t think our league positions will count for anything going into the game.

“Holyhead have had a tough season, but we can’t afford to underestimate them.

“All season we’ve shown how consistent we can be in the league and the quality we’ve got in this side to win us games.

“From defence to attack we know we’ll have to put a real shift in, because anything can happen in a cup final and we can’t afford to be complacent at all.

“But for us it’s a chance to end the season on a real high and that’s what everyone’s focused on.

“To win the double before we make the step up to the Welsh Premier next season would be the perfect way to sign off.

“Our preparations for the game have been good and the lads are all really looking forward to it.”

Airbus will be without Nathan Woolfe for the clash after the midfielder returned to parent club Connah’s Quay Nomads.

Forward Joe Chaplin and defender Sam Hart also miss out for the champions in the 2.30pm kick-off.
