AIRBUS may have the title and promotion sewn up - but assistant manager Andrew Thomas has warned his players against easing off with League Cup final places up for grabs.

The Wingmakers secured top spot with three games to spare as they beat Holywell Town 4-0 and closest challengers Flint Town United were beaten 2-1 by Buckley Town.

But Thomas wants his successful players to keep their foot on the gas between now and the end of the season, starting with a league cup final dress rehearsal against Holyhead Hotspur on Saturday.

Thomas said: “We want to finish the season by winning every game we’ve got left.

“We want to win the last three league games and then win the League Cup final to complete the double, which would be great.

“It’s good that we’ve got the cup final to look forward to and the players know that there are places to play for.

“It’s also not fair on the rest of the league if we don’t give our all, so we’ll keep standards high.”

Missing out on the league title will not detract from a ‘very positive’ campaign for Flint, says Niall McGuinness.

The Silkmen boss believes that securing a second-place finish would represent significant progress for his side.

But he insists his side have ‘a long way to go’ before they can lay their hands on the league trophy.

Speaking ahead of Saturday’s clash with Guilsfield, he said: “I think we can say there’s been a big turnaround in our league position - not just when compared to last season, but the last few.

“Winning the league cup was great for us last season and I think finishing second would be another move in the right direction.

“We know there’s a long way to go before we dominate the league in the way Airbus did this year, but we’ll look to keep building.”

“Guilsfield will be a tough test for us. I watched them against Buckley and they’re a well-drilled side with really good wide players and one of the best centre halves in the league.”

Defender Tom Kemp and midfielder Dylan Allshorn are both injury doubts for Flint

Buckley Town still have a top-six finish in their sights despite a last-gasp home defeat to Guilsfield in midweek.

Two injury-time goals condemned the Bucks to a 2-1 reverse, with the Flintshire side heading to Denbigh Town on Saturday.

And manager Dan Moore has called for focus from his side after a late collapse on Tuesday night.

He said: “The good thing for us is that there’s a quick turnaround between these games and we can go to Denbigh and try to put the last game behind us.

"There were a couple of defensive lapses late in the game, but we can’t dwell on one result too much and have to look at the bigger picture now.

“We’ve got three games left and we feel like a top six place is still achievable. Winning all of our remaining games would more than likely guarantee that, so that has to be our aim now.”

Buckley forward Connor Littler misses the clash at Central Park.
