IN-FORM Buckley Town climbed to sixth in the table with a 2-0 home victory over basement side Holyhead Hotspur.

The Bucks notched their third successive league win courtesy of goals in each half from Chris Roberts and Keiron Moore.

Despite the result, manager Dan Moore felt his side had fallen below their recent high standards in attack but was pleased with their defensive qualities.

He said:“I thought we were well below the levels we showed in the wins at Ruthin and Holywell.

"We lacked composure in front of goal and there were too many players shooting from poor positions or trying difficult passes when it should have been a simple ball.

"But it’s now three clean sheets on the bounce, which is really pleasing.

"Last season our success was built on a good defensive record and it’s good that we’re now doing that at a higher level.”

After Shaun Tinsley saw a goal ruled out for offside and Jake Roberts hit the post, Buckley went ahead from a corner on 28 minutes when Roberts slid in and drove the ball into the roof of the net.

Despite a spirited response from the visitors early in the second half, Buckley wrapped up the points on 80 minutes when Jake Roberts pulled the ball back for Moore who calmly side-footed into the bottom corner.

Holywell Town’s problems mounted after they were beaten 1-0 at Rhyl on Friday night.

A battling performance from the visitors proved to be in vain as Cai Owen’s stunning second half strike proved decisive for the Lilywhites.

Rhyl began the contest brightly, with Sam Molyneux forcing Wellmen stopper Tyler French into a smart stop.

Few clear-cut chances followed in the first half, though Wellmen attacking pair Sam Jones and Damian Ketley were both inches from opening the scoring.

Holywell started the second half brightly and Rhyl stopper Rory Crowther was called upon to divert a Mark Winslade effort, before Owen stole the show on 50 minutes with a fine individual run and a neat one-two with Mike Pritchard before firing past French.

Winslade spurned the chance of a leveller on 76 minutes when he steered Ketley’s cross wide of the target, and went agonizingly close late on with a curling effort that flew just wide of the target.

Defeat kept Holywell among the relegation places with results elsewhere not aiding their cause.

Denbigh Town boosted their survival hopes with a 1-0 win at Guilsfield, while Llanrhaeadr moved further clear of danger by beating Ruthin Town 3-2.

Porthmadog remain third despite a 1-0 win against Conwy Borough.
