Flint Town United moved to within seven points of the Cymru Alliance summit with a 2-0 home victory over Rhyl.

Ieuan Hewitt's thunderbolt opened the scoring on 62 minutes, before Richie Foulkes netted a penalty five minutes later to wrap up victory.

The result sealed an impressive league double for Silkmen boss Niall McGuinness against his former club, and closed the gap on pacesetters Airbus.

McGuinness said: "After a cagey first half I though we were much better with the ball in the second.

"We found our feet and started to get some rhythm into our attacks ad as the game went on I felt our quality really shone through.

"We took the game to them and got our rewards, but to keep a clean sheet was really pleasing too."

Goalscoring chances were at a premium in the first half, with Flint going closest to opener when Mark Cadwallader headed over the bar from Kyle Smyth's cross.

A much livelier second half followed and, after chances at both eds, Flint went ahead when Ged Kinsella laid the ball off for Hewitt who lashed into the top corner from almost 30 yards to give Rhyl stopper Jon Hill-Dunt no chance.

The advantage was doubled soon after when Foulkes drilled home from the spot after Andy Brown was felled by Lilywhites' defender Reece Fairhurst.

From there, the home side closed ranks and saw out the game to record a 13th league win and keep their faint title hopes alive.

Andy Thomas compared the playing surface at Guilsfield to a farmer's field after Airbus were held to a 1-1 draw in Powys.

The visitors took a deserved 14th minute lead when Lewis Buckley deflected Nathan Woolfe's goalbound effort into the net.

Despite struggling for fluency on a bobbly pitch, the Wingmakers continued to threaten the home goal and twice saw efforts scrambled off the line by a resilient Guils defence.

And after failing to capitalise on that pressure, Airbus were punished in the dying stages when a long throw into their box caused panic and Robbie James' close-range strike deflected off Airbus defender Phil Clarke and into the net.

The late equaliser condemned the league's pacesetters to a third successive draw, with assistant manager Thomas frustrated by the playing conditions at Clos Mytton.

"There were tractor marks on the pitch and it was like playing on a farmer's field", he lamented.

"It wasn't much of a football match in terms of quality. Both teams were playing long balls all game because of the bobbly surface, but I still felt we should have been further ahead at half-time.

"We haven't taken our chances again and that ruthlessness is something we need to get back in our game."

Dan Moore hailed Buckley Town’s best display in two seasons after their 1-0 victory at Ruthin Town.

An assured away performance saw Buckley dominate the first half, with Shaun Tinsley, Kieron Moore both going close before Jake Roberts hit the bar.

The winner arrived early in the second half when Luke Blizard met an inswinging corner and saw his initial attempt blocked before stooping to head home the rebound.

Victory saw Moore’s side leapfrog Ruthin into eighth place, as the Bucks’ solid campaign continued.

Moore said: “I think it was probably our best performance in a couple of seasons. "Considering we hadn’t played for three weeks, I thought we dominated for 80 minutes of the game and our defence has looked comfortable for most of the game.

"It was a scrappy goal to win the game, but I was pleased for Luke who deserved it for his performance.”

Bangor City were 1-0 winners at Conwy, Porthmadog beat Holyhead 2-0, Penrhyncoch lost 2-1 at Llanrhaeadr, while Prestatyn beat Denbigh 2-1.
