Gresford Athletic boss Steve Halliwell hailed his side’s ‘massive’ resilience as they held leaders Airbus to a goalless draw at Clappers Lane.

The free-scoring Wingmakers failed to hit the net for only the second time this season as Gresford’s dogged rearguard action withstood a barrage of pressure.

After Jake Eyre spurned a decent early chance to put the hosts ahead, Airbus then took control with a series of relentless attacks.

Midfielder Curtis Strong impressed and his surging runs down the right flank tormented Gresford full-back Joe Culshaw all afternoon.

And the hosts were indebted to goalkeeper Ben Jones, who produced a succession of fine first half saves to thwart the visitors.

Airbus were denied the lead early in the second half when forward Asa Hamilton saw a goal ruled out for a clear handball.

And as the Colliers’ collective defensive efforts continued to frustrate the visitors, they almost snatched an unlikely victory late on when Tom Freeman dribbled to the byline and crossed for Eyre who was inches away from a tap-in.

Halliwell said: “It was a massive performance from us and to a man I thought we were fantastic. They absolutely battered us, but the fact that we stood up to them in that kind of onslaught deserves a lot of credit.

“I’m sure Joe Culshaw will be having nightmares about Strong running at him for a while yet, but he stuck to his task brilliantly all afternoon.”

The result saw Airbus’ lead at the summit cut to 10 points, but assistant manager Andy Thomas remains upbeat about the run-in.

He said: “We’ve passed up so many good chances to win the game and that’s the frustration. Yes their keeper has made some very good saves but we haven’t been ruthless enough in front of goal.

"Generally it was a very good away performance and we don’t feel we need to panic too much about the result. We just need to get that clinical edge back in our game.”

Injury-hit Holywell Town showed their fighting qualities as they came from a goal down to record a 3-1 victory at Llanrhaeadr.

Trailing to an early Llan goal, the Wellmen restored parity midway through the half courtesy of a thunderbolt from Rob Jones.

The visitors resolve was then severely tested as injuries to Matty Harvey and Morgan Jones forced Wellmen manager John Haseldin to make a double substitution, before a further injury to James Graham prompted a third and final change before the interval.

Despite the enforced reshuffle, the visitors pressed for the lead after the restart and were rewarded when Steve Lewis tapped home from a low cross.

With Llan were reduced to 10 men later in the half, Lewis wrapped up the points late on from the penalty spot after he had been felled inside the box.

The result saw Holywell move to within two points of 13th placed Denbigh Town, who were beaten 3-1 at home by Conwy Borough.

Wellmen assistant manager Dave Sweet said: "It was a big result for us, but it will mean nothing unless we follow it up with another big performance in the next game against Conwy.

"We're pleased with how we played though.

"John's had to shuffle the pack a bit because of the injuries picked up by three of our lads in that first half.

"Some of the Llanrhaeadr challenges were a bit overzealous, but I thought we adapted really well in terms of the players who came off the bench and those who were playing out of position for us.

"The win was for the lads who got injured and the supporters who came down to Llanrhaeadr for us."

Niall McGuinness believes that Flint’s 2-1 home victory over struggling Penrhyncoch could prove vital to sustaining their slim title hopes.

The Silkmen went ahead on 21 minutes when Brandon Burrows’ cross from the left was spilled by Penrhyncoch keeper Leigh Jenkins and Andy Brown forced the loose ball home at the far post.

Trailing at half-time, the relegation-threatened visitors levelled a minute after the restart when Jonathan Evans rose unchallenged at a corner and headed beyond Flint stopper Aaron Jones from a corner.

But Flint replied immediately and restored their lead a minute later courtesy of Mark Cadwallader’s well-placed header.

The goal proved decisive as the hosts spurned further chances to add to their tally but protected their lead effectively in the closing stages.

The result saw Flint close to within 12 points of the summit with a game in hand.

McGuinness said: “Winning this one was vital for us to keep ourselves in with a chance of catching the leaders. We’ve slipped up in games like this already this season, so it was really pleasing that we got ourselves back in front after being caught cold for their equaliser just after half-time.

“It should have been more comfortable in the end, but it’s a result that keeps us in the hunt.”

Buckley Town boss Dan Moore praised his side’s character in their thrilling 3-2 home victory over Prestatyn Town.

The Bucks recorded their first league double of the season as they twice came from behind to edge out the in-form Seasiders.

Oli Buckley’s composed finish opened the scoring for the Seasiders, but Aled Bellis levelled six minutes later after a smart counter-attack.

But the visitors soon restored their lead via Dan Roberts' clinical close-range finish, before they were reduced to 10-men when Casey Faulkner was dismissed for violent conduct.

The hosts pressed home their numerical advantage after the restart with Chris Roberts heading home from a corner on 60 minutes to restore parity.

The winner arrived in style on 72 minutes when Jake Roberts’ chipped effort beat Town keeper Ryan Woods to secure all three points.

A delighted Moore said: “After going behind twice in the game, we’re so pleased with the character of the players to keep going. and eventually take the three points.

“We started the game pretty well and we always felt that we were well in the game, even after conceding when and how we did.

“We scored three superb goals, and I’m pleased for the players who have continued to take what we work on in training into games.

"The attitude and commitment of the players is unquestionable and we’ll continue to work hard for the remaining 10 games.”

Second-placed Bangor City enjoyed a 4-1 victory at Holyhead Hotspur, while Rhyl climbed to third by beating visitors Porthmadog 2-1.
